Serving our church, our community, and God with our time and talents

Thrifty Treasures

Open from September through June, Thrifty Treasures features very inexpensive gently-used clothing and small household items.  Donate your treasures or volunteer to work with a crew of volunteers.

Monday Morning Men’s Club

Fellowship for men (and women!) of the church committed to doing maintenance work and planning for more major projects.   All are welcome.

East Church Companions

A number of East Church members volunteer to offer fellowship and support for those with a diagnosis of dementia and their caregivers.

IHN (Interfaith Hospitality Network)

East Church is helping to end the cycle of homelessness in Grand Rapids.  In partnership with Family Promise, East Church hosts homeless families in shelter for one week, several times each year.  Volunteers help to provide dinner, offer respite care for children, stay overnight as on-site hosts, and staff the desk.

Use SignupGenius to register to volunteer.

Community Garden

East Church provides space for garden boxes which are available to members of the community through the church office.  Availability is on a first-come, first-served basis.

Feeding God’s Children Food Pantry

Open the first two Tuesdays of each month from 1:00-4:30 p.m., our pantry is staffed by volunteers and serves clients referred to us by the Baxter Community Center, 616-456-8593.

Mission Trips

Annual Mission Trips are planned for our youth groups and their adult chaperones.  Recent trips:

  • 2016 National Youth Event (NYE) – Youth from the United Church of Christ gathered in Florida for a week centered on four pillars: faith, leadership, service, and social justice.
  • 2017 Re-Member – East Church youth and chaperones volunteered at the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation in South Dakota to build relationships and take on projects to improve the lives of the Lakota people.

Women’s Guild

The Joy Guild and Sharon Guild meet periodically for service, fellowship, and devotions.

Sharon Guild

Members of this guild get involved through activities like providing coffee and treats after the service, running Thrifty Treasures (our resale shop), assisting with the food pantry or Family Promise (our housing of the homeless), contributing care kits and clothing to D.A. Blodgett-St. John’s, sending cards to shut-ins, or performing any number of other service projects as needed.

Joy Guild

Joy Guild is a group of senior women who enjoy meeting monthly for lunch and companionship.  There are some opportunities for participation that fit the senior lifestyle such as remembering those who unable to leave their homes.  New members are always welcome.

Church Boards and Committees

Service to East Church may also include serving on committees that offer leadership to the ministries of this church.  Below is a partial list of ways to serve:

  • Christian Education Board
  • Finance Board
  • Mission & Community Outreach Board
  • Worship and Arts Board
  • Property & Maintenance Board
